What are debt collectors required to send as verification of a debt?

Published: Thursday, August 31, 2006

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act states that if a debt is disputed, "the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt, or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector."

The requirement is that the debt collector obtain verification from the creditor that the amount demanded is the amount owed by the consumer from whom the collector is attempting to collect. If the consumer disputes a certain portion of the debt, or if multiple debts are involved, or if the debt includes interest or fees that have been added, an itemization may be required.
